Guest thanking a Balinese private chef with a handshake in a clean villa kitchen at the end of the evening

This is the question guests are most embarrassed to ask, usually whispered while we pack up the kitchen: "What's normal here?" So here is the straight answer, from the side of the kitchen that receives the tips — without any pressure, because a tip should never feel like a second bill.

The Short Answer

Tipping in Bali is appreciated but not expected; it is not built into the culture the way it is in the United States. If you would like to thank a private chef, 5–10% of the bill, in cash at the end of the evening, is generous by Bali standards — roughly IDR 150,000–300,000 for a romantic dinner for two, or IDR 270,000–540,000 for a dinner for six. If you tip nothing, a good chef will still thank you warmly and mean it.

Service Charge: Why Our Price Has None

Many Bali restaurants and hotels add a service charge of 5–10% plus government tax, so the menu price can grow by up to about 21% when the bill arrives. When a service charge is already included, an extra tip is optional. Our prices work differently: there is no service charge and nothing added after dinner — the price confirmed on WhatsApp is the price you pay (see the pricing page). It also means a tip, if you give one, goes straight to the people who cooked for you.

Private Chef Tipping Guide in IDR

BookingTypical billGenerous tip (5–10%)
Romantic dinner for twoIDR 3,000,000IDR 150,000–300,000
Private dinner for sixIDR 5,400,000IDR 270,000–540,000
BBQ party for tenIDR 7,000,000IDR 350,000–700,000
Breakfast chef for fourIDR 2,000,000IDR 100,000–200,000
Week of meal prep for twoIDR 3,300,000IDR 165,000–330,000, once at the end

The bills come from our standard rates; the cost breakdown compares them with restaurants. If the chef brought an assistant or service staff, split the tip between them or hand it to the lead chef to share — both are normal.

How to Hand Over a Tip

Rupiah, Not Dollars

Tip in rupiah rather than foreign cash. Small foreign notes are awkward to change, money changers often refuse worn or older notes, and the rate on a single note is poor — so a USD 20 bill can be worth much less to the person receiving it than it looks. Withdraw rupiah from a bank ATM or change money at an authorised money changer before your last dinner.

Multi-Day Stays and Groups

For a week of breakfasts or meal prep, one tip at the end works best. A breakfast chef for a family of four, five mornings a week, is IDR 8,000,000 at our rates — so IDR 400,000–800,000 at the end of the week is a generous thank-you. For events with service staff, one envelope for the whole team, handed to the lead chef, makes sure everyone who worked the night is included.

When Not to Tip

If something was not right — a dish missed the mark, the timing slipped, a diet was not handled the way you asked — tell us instead. We would much rather fix it than receive a tip we did not earn, and an honest word on WhatsApp is how a small team gets better.

Other Ways to Say Thank You

A tip is one way to say thank you; two others matter just as much to a small team. An honest review, wherever you found us, helps more than most guests realise. And a recommendation to friends heading to Bali is the best compliment a private chef can get.

Tipping Villa Staff, Drivers and Everyone Else

For the rest of your trip, the usual Bali guidance is: a private driver IDR 50,000–100,000 for a full day; hotel housekeeping IDR 20,000–50,000; restaurants without a service charge 5–10% for good service; Grab or Gojek drivers a small rounding-up. For villa staff — housekeepers, gardeners, the pool team — a lump sum at the end of the stay, shared among the team, is the usual way; ask the villa manager what is customary for that villa. Our guide to villa cooks vs private chefs covers how the kitchen side of villa staffing works.

The Bottom Line

Never feel obliged. If the evening was everything you hoped, 5–10% in cash with a thank-you is generous. If money is tight at the end of a long trip, a kind word and a review mean a great deal too. What matters most to us happens before the tip: a fixed, all-in price, a great dinner and a spotless kitchen — see how we work on our private dinner page.

Common Questions

Do you have to tip a private chef in Bali?
No. Tipping in Bali is appreciated but not expected, and our prices already include everything, with no service charge added.
How much should I tip a private chef in Bali?
If you want to tip, 5–10% of the bill is generous — about IDR 150,000–300,000 for a romantic dinner for two, or IDR 270,000–540,000 for a dinner for six.
Should I tip in cash or by bank transfer?
Cash in rupiah is best, handed over at the end of the evening. For multi-day bookings, one tip at the end of the stay is normal.
Is a service charge added to your prices?
No. The price confirmed on WhatsApp is the final price — no service charge and no extra fees after dinner.
Should I tip in rupiah or in dollars?
In rupiah. Small foreign notes are hard to change, money changers often refuse worn or older notes, and the rate on a single note is poor — so rupiah is worth more to the person receiving it.
